Abstract: Danny Chambers, a vet and newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Winchester, has been appointed as the party's front bench spokesperson on mental health, just two months after his election victory in July. His appointment comes shortly after his maiden speech in the House of Commons, in which he underscored the urgent need for improved mental health service provision. He highlighted the lengthy waiting times many face to access specialist care, commenting: 'A person who goes to their GP in crisis may have to wait months -even more than a year -to get the specialist care they need. That is not good enough.'In his speech, Danny also praised Vetlife, a charity supporting veterinary professionals, for which he previously served as a trustee. He paid tribute to his late colleague Sarah Brown, with whom he cofounded a mental health support group for vets.In his new role, Danny is advocating for proactive support for groups including farmers, military veterans, new mothers and those struggling with debt.He welcomed the government's commitment to prioritising mental health, as outlined in the King's Speech, and emphasised the need for it to be treated with the same urgency as physical health.
