K этимологии праслав. *rezъ и русского рез

Type: article
Abstract: Proto-Slavic *rězъ and Russian рез “profit, interest” are analyzed in connection with IE. *h3reĝ- “to move along the straight line; move uniformly in one direction” reflected by Greek ὀρέγω_ and Vedic ŕjyati,_ṛñjáti. The latter verb has undergone a semantic development giving rise to “to gain control of, bring under domination”, and “to gain profit”. My hypothesis conflicts with the analysis of M. Vasmer, who related рез to the Russian verb резать “to cut”.
