Abstract: This article was adapted from the address Dr. Trief delivered as the recipient of the American Diabetes Association's Richard R. Rubin Award for 2024. This award recognizes a behavioral researcher who has made outstanding, innovative contributions to the study and understanding of the behavioral aspects of diabetes in diverse populations. Dr. Trief delivered the address in June 2024 at the Association's 84th Scientific Sessions.
