Encountering ‘the Most Remarkable Army of All Times’: Inter-Allied Relations and Military Hierarchies in Macedonia During the First World War
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The Allied soldiers who served in Macedonia during the First World War fought as part of a diverse multinational force without parallel in any other theatre of the war, comprising troops from Britain, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia and Greece, as well as contingents from across the British and French colonial empires. Although the high-level interallied disputes between generals and politicians in conducting the campaign are well-studied, less clear is how those on the ground navigated the challenges of coalition warfare. This article draws on material from several different contingents to reconstruct the dynamics of interallied relations in Macedonia.
