Abstract: A numerical method using Finite Element Method (FEM) based Freeware Finite Element Method Magnetic (FEMM) is used to determine the optimal insulation thickness and diameter (T/d) of three core belted and gas insulated cable by analyzing the maximum Electric field (E-field) in the cable. The FEMM result accuracy is compared with analytical and other numerical methods, the charge simulation method. A well-affordable and comparable result is obtained. A similar analogy to single phase coaxial cable, for an overall three core belted cable radius of 1p.u, the best ‘T/d’ for the cable is 0.80 when 1p.u peak magnitude potential is applied to the phase voltages. Additionally, the best conductor radius and conductor center-to-cable center dimension for CGIC is verified as 0.18 and 0.5 respectively. These reported results were obtained numerically using the FEM-based freeware FEMM model for the first time as no analytical solution is available in these cases. Hence, the FEMM provides an elegant way to determine the E-field stress distribution inside the cable cross-section at any point and at any instant of the three-phase waveform to determine the appropriate cable dimensions. The simulation is very controlled and allows fine realistic details to be added to the model. Since it is possible to force both conductor and sheath potential exactly to the required potential, there is no potential error between applied and calculated potential over the entire range of ‘T/d’.
