Life of Pavel Kananov (On the 140th Anniversary of the Philosopher, Psychologist, Book Historian and Bibliographer)

Abstract: The work is devoted to the life and creative heritage of the outstanding Russian scientist, book historian and bibliographer Pavel Khristoforovich Kananov (1883—1967). The main attention is paid to the social origin and the early period of the scientist’s formation in the early twentieth century (studying at the Moscow University and then in Germany, as well as the circumstances of his obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Munich in 1910). The stages and peculiarities of P.H. Kananov’s participation in public and political life of that time are shown. The time and circumstances of P.H. Kananov’s transition from philosophy and psychology to book studies and librarybibliographic activity and his employment in the Lenin State Library of the USSR (where he worked until his retirement in 1957) are established.
