The Reorganization of Eurasian Logistics Networks and Geopolitics Due to the Ukrainian War: Focusing on the International South-North Transport Corridor (INSTC)
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The Eurasian logistics network is being reorganized around the north-south corridor from the existing east-west direction as a result of the Ukrainian War. After the war, the international order is rapidly shifting to a multipolar system that builds alliances with regional powers, and the role of economic corridors in strengthening economic connections between countries and advancing regional integration is becoming increasingly important. The reason why INSTC is drawing attention as a major global transportation route is because of the potential growth factors of this corridor and the geopolitical and geoeconomic strategies of Russia and major participants, India and Iran. First, India and Iran are on the same path as the ‘multipolar world order’ that Russia has emphasized since the Ukrainian War. Second, INSTC is an economic corridor that is essential for the Eastern Policy, which is a key strategy presented by Russia (Pivot to Asia), Iran (Look East), and India (Act East Policy). Considering that economic corridors function as a major means of responding to changes in the geopolitical and geoeconomic environment, this study aims to examine the geopolitical environment and corridor utilization strategies among the major participants in the INSTC since the start of the Ukraine War.
