Abstract: Accurate and comprehensive surveillance and review of all deaths of pregnant and recently pregnant women is essential to produce the underpinning information to drive appropriate improvements to healthcare services and wider actions to prevent future deaths.Sole use of routinely collected data cannot achieve this purpose and enhanced systems of maternal death surveillance and review are essential. As has long been recognised, we need to think 'Beyond the numbers'.
