Abstract: the cheese against its price. If we find the slice appealing, we must determine how much will satisfy us.We juggle and haggle. The reality that what transpires is a monetary transaction-even in the most upscale shops-goes unreported. The sociology of sensing has been a relatively unexplored domain, despite its compelling linkages with both cognition and emotion.Just as we think as others around us think and feel as they feel, so too do we taste as they taste. These authors are correct to recognize that judgments, whether of coffee or cheese, are multisensorial and occur in spaces where others shape our preferences. As both authors properly recognize, we reach our judgments through wellestablished routines; these never occur in isolation. Those communities in which we are enmeshed serve as guides for our preferences that we come to believe are ours alone. These judgments, subtle or dramatic, recognize that a commitment to sense becomes, in time, a means through which we become complicit in an economic order.
