Abstract: Periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation and infection of the supporting tissues of the teeth, has been widely studied due to its potential impacts on systemic health. In pregnant women, periodontal conditions can affect more than just the oral cavity, directly influencing maternal and fetal health. This literature review aims to analyze the impact of pregnancy on periodontal health, considering the main implications during gestation and emphasizing the importance of periodontal care during pregnancy. Based on clinical studies and epidemiological research, this study examines the influence of hormonal and immunological changes during pregnancy on periodontal disease progression and highlights the relevance of preventive and therapeutic interventions during gestation. The results indicate that proper dental follow-up and periodontal health management can help reduce risks for both mother and baby. It is concluded that awareness and the inclusion of periodontal care in prenatal routines are essential to minimize complications associated with periodontal disease during pregnancy.
