Representation of Emotions in the Teaching of Virtues and Vices: the Agency of Images in Fifteen-century France

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article offers a new approach to discuss the learning of emotions, behavior, and virtues within the context of late medieval aristocratic education. It examines the representation of emotions in the teaching of virtues and vices in fifteenth-century France through an analysis of illustrations of vices in the Morgan Book of Hours and discusses how gestures and movements depicted in these illustrations convey emotions and contribute to moral education. The article also explores the discourse on gestures, emotions, and virtues in didactic treatises and emphasizes the importance of visual representation in moral education during the late Middle Ages. This case study might contribute new methods to the study of the socialization of individuals in past societies where works of art had a pivotal role.
