Analysis of bit error rate for conventional receivers in DS-OCDMA utilizing extended prime codes

Abstract: DS-OCDMA is a multiple access technique that enables simultaneous transmission of data from multiple users over a common optical channel. It leverages the principles of code division multiple access (CDMA) to allow for efficient utilization of bandwidth while maintaining minimal interference between users. The DS-OCDMA system employs unique optical codes for each user, enabling data to be spread across a wider bandwidth. The codes are typically designed to have specific properties, such as low cross-correlation, to minimize interference. Extended Prime Codes (EPC) (Huang, C., & Tseng, P., 2004) are one type of code used in DS-OCDMA, characterized by their optimal properties for multi-user environments. A conventional receiver in a DS-OCDMA system is designed to detect the signal from a particular user amidst the noise and interference from other users. It typically uses a threshold-based detection method to determine whether a bit has been received correctly. The performance of the receiver is heavily influenced by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the choice of optical code. The article presents a theoretical analysis of the Bit Error Rate (BER) for the conventional receiver using EPC codes under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) conditions. Numerical simulations using Matlab software are conducted to validate the theoretical findings.
