Traditions and Transitions: Investigation of Apostolic Decision-Making Methods in the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15:1-21

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article explores the decision-making methods adopted by early church leaders during the Council of Jerusalem, as recorded in Acts 15. Through careful analysis of the text, the researcher examines how Jewish tradition and the new challenges presented by the growth of the Gentile church influenced the dynamics of apostolic decision-making. This study uses a hermeneutic approach to understand the theological, social, and political arguments considered during the decision-making process and how they reflect the principles of an inclusive and democratic early community. This research shows that this decision-making method demonstrates a spirit of consensus, respect for tradition, and sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts. The process of open dialogue, participation of the Holy Spirit, and respect for the Scriptures' teachings emphasize the Church's relevance and flexibility in the face of change and controversy. Our conclusion confirms that the Council of Jerusalem is an essential model for decision-making practices in the contemporary Church, offering valuable insights into maintaining doctrinal unity in diverse practices.
