As mulheres no pensamento de Hume: uma reconsideração
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: I will examine the ways in which women are represented in David Hume's work. Initially, I will undertake a comparison between essays such as "Of Essay Writing" and "Of the Study of History" and other texts from the period, showing that Hume refers to women in a way that is very close to the sexist conceptions of his time. I will proceed to show that the model of politeness defended by Hume, influenced by notions of gallantry, relegates women to an inferior condition. Finally, I will show that the sexism expressed by the author does not necessarily derive from his philosophy, whose more abstract principles can, in fact, contribute to contemporary discussions on gender.
