Abstract: 3D modeling with oblique photogrammetry is widely applied in city-level real-world 3D model reconstruction and applications. However, the scattered and irregular nature of photogrammetrically generated textures often results in fragmented texture atlases with numerous seams. In this paper, we introduce a planar feature-preserving texture defragmentation method for urban building models. This method enhances rendering performance and storage efficiency, contributing to the high-quality visualization and application of building models. Compared to traditional defragmentation methods, our approach employs regular planar structures as constraints for merging, avoiding the randomness and complexity typically associated with texture charts. The proposed approach is composed of three main stages: extraction of planar features from texture fragments; employment of these planar elements as guiding constraints for merging adjacent texture fragments within a two-dimensional texture space; an enhanced texture packing algorithm designed for more regular texture charts to systematically generate refined texture atlas. We conducted experiments on a variety of building models to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The performance of our approach was validated both quantitatively and qualitatively in comparison to traditional defragmentation methods.
