Abstract: Beneficial microbiomes offer a sustainable alternative to chemical treatments in post-harvest fruit management, helping reduce spoilage, extend shelf life, and maintain fruit quality. Comprised of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi, these natural communities inhibit pathogens, enhance resilience during storage, and can even improve fruit’s sensory and nutritional properties. This article explores the roles of beneficial microbiomes in post-harvest management, covering strategies like microbial sprays, biocontrol agents, and probiotic coatings. Case studies highlight successful applications on fruits such as strawberries, apples, and citrus, demonstrating the potential for microbiomes to match or even surpass traditional preservatives. Despite challenges such as stability, regulatory approval, and consumer perception, advancements in microbiome technology, real-time monitoring, and microbiome customization are driving this field forward. Microbiome-based solutions are positioned to play a critical role in sustainable agriculture, reducing food waste, and aligning with global efforts for a safer, environmentally friendly approach to food preservation.
