Design and application of hybrid lattice metamaterial structures with high energy absorption and compressive resistance

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has enabled the design and application of various lattice structures, leading to an increasing number of optimization design studies. However, there is limited research on the selection of basic unit cell structures and lattice hybridization methods in lattice hybrid design. Therefore, based on bionic principles, this study designed seven types of unit cell structures and proposed four novel cross-scale hybrid forms (holistic interpenetration, voxel alternation, layered transition, and multiscale embedding). Using these hybrid forms, twelve sets of hybrid lattice metamaterial 3D models were constructed via implicit body programming design. The basic unit cell structures and hybrid lattice metamaterial specimens were fabricated using selective laser sintering (SLS) with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) powder as the raw material. Quasi-static compression tests were conducted to comprehensively analyze the mechanical properties, energy absorption, and printability of these lattice structures. The results indicate that cells a and b exhibit superior mechanical performance compared to other cell structures, and hybrid lattice metamaterial structures 4 and 7, formed by cells a and b using voxel alternation and layered transition hybridization methods, respectively, demonstrate superior mechanical properties over other hybrid lattice metamaterial structures. AM technology enables the fabrication of any hybrid lattice metamaterial structure, and by adjusting the design parameters of the basic cell and hybrid forms, hybrid lattice metamaterials with optimized performance and suitability for specific application scenarios can be achieved to meet industrial demands.
