No detectable loss of myonuclei from human muscle fibers after 6 wk of immobilization following an Achilles tendon rupture

Abstract: The impact of prolonged immobilization on muscle fiber characteristics is difficult to study in humans and therefore remains poorly understood. We analyzed cross-sections and single fibers from gastrocnemius before and after 6 wk of immobilization due to an Achilles tendon rupture. Our data suggest that myonuclei are not lost in response to such stimuli, thus lending support to the hypothesis of myonuclear permanency in human muscle.
