Research on dynamic behaviour of a co-sintered steel-tungsten alloy material

Abstract: The newly proposed co-sintering method was used to fabricate reliably connected steel-tungsten alloy layered material. To study the dynamic mechanical properties of steel and tungsten alloy made by co-sintering conditions and interaction between the two matrices of the co-sintered steel-tungsten alloy material, intensive experiments were conducted by the SHPB technique. Experimental results show that temperature rise from 298K to 1073K will cause an 80% loss in strength of the sintered steel, and 50% in tungsten alloy. Strain rates hardening is less prominent, with 18% increase in strength for sintered steel and 15% for tungsten alloy, from 1000/s to 5000/s. The sintered steel shows considerable ductility with high strain rates. However, the tungsten alloy shows great plasticity up to 5000/s at room temperature, thus contributing to the intact of the sintered steel in the bi-layered samples. Engineering applications of co-sintered material should take into account such results. Furthermore, to help numerical analysis of the co-sintered material, a reasonable treatment of the interface of co-sintered structures with incorporation of the dynamic compression behaviour of the bi-layered samples was suggested, but requires further exploration. Even though the experimental data was fitted by altering the meaning of the dimensionless temperature in the Johnson-Cook constitutive model, the reason to the shit between the experimental data and the fitted curves by dimensionless temperature should also be further studied.
