Characterization of mineral additives and their impact on cement paste properties
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study combines a theoretical and experimental approach to examine the influence of mineral additives (limestone and slag) at various percentages (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) on the physico-mechanical properties of cements, compared to artificial Portland cement (CPA). On the theoretical side, it provides a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the incorporation of mineral waste into cementitious materials, highlighting the chemical and physical properties of these additives. Practically, the analysis of effects on consistency, specific mass, setting time, and compressive strength reveals that slag significantly improves short-term mechanical strength due to its pozzolanic effect, while limestone reduces both density and mechanical strength because of its inertness. Experimental results show that optimal performance is achieved with a 10% additive dosage, ensuring a good balance between consistency, density, and strength. This work offers practical recommendations for the use of mineral additives in the formulation of more sustainable and economically viable cements.
