Study of water pollution parameters in the dry and rainy seasons on the pollution index of the Mesuji River, Lampung, Indonesia

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Rivers are natural resources that give people access to water. Rivers are frequently contaminated due to numerous human activities that occur nearby. Pollution of river water might be chemical, physical, or biological. This study intends to examine TSS, pH, BOD, COD, DO, phosphate, fecal coliform, total coliform, and heavy metals to assess the water quality of the Mesuji River. The study was conducted at seven stations along the Mesuji River in the Lampung Province between September 2022 and February 2023. The results of river water quality measurements show that the TSS value meets the quality standards, the pH does not reach the standards, and the BOD in the dry season does not meet the standards. In comparison, only MS-02 satisfies the quality standards during the dry season of COD, whereas every other season's COD meets the standards during the wet season. While only MS-06 satisfies the quality standards during the dry season, all stations fulfill them during the rainy season. In contrast, the DO does not meet the standards during the wet season. Heavy metals continue to satisfy quality standards, fecal coliform and total coliform meet norms, and phosphate varies with the rainy and dry seasons. The water quality index (IKA) value of 30 in the dry season is in the poor category, and the IKA value of 50 in the rainy season is in the moderate category. The Pollution Index (IP) value in the dry season is in the fairly polluted category, while the IP value in the rainy season is in the slightly polluted category.
