Performance Evaluation of a Reference Evapotranspiration Model in Reclaimed Land Environments and Comparison with Inland Areas

Abstract: In South Korea, reclaimed lands, covering approximately 130,000 ha, are utilized as agricultural hubs.Recently, there has been a trend of converting paddy fields to upland fields, highlighting the increasing importance of agricultural water supply.Although there has been extensive research on crop growth in reclaimed land environments, studies on irrigation quantity estimation for such lands are limited. Therefore This study aimed to estimate appropriate irrigation quantities for the unique climatic conditions of reclaimed land by analyzing and evaluating five reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) models, and then comparing them with inland region climates.By applying climate data from the Saemangeum reclaimed land to models, and comparing ET o values calculated by these models with actual ET o values measured using lysimeters, it was found that FAO Penman-Monteith equation exhibited the highest accuracy with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.36.However, it showed almost similar accuracy to Priestley-Taylor equation, which had an RMSE of 1.38.The climates of Saemangeum and Jeonju differed in wind speed and humidity. When applying FAO Penman-Monteith and Priestley-Taylor equations, which showed high performance, to both regions, the results showed that FAO Penman-Monteith equation had an R 2 of 0.70, while Priestley-Taylor equation had an R 2 of 0.90.The difference in ET o between the two regions was attributed to FAO Penman-Monteith equation reflecting the differences in wind speed between Saemangeum and Jeonju. Therefore, FAO Penman-Monteith equation is considered the most suitable model for reclaimed land, while Priestley-Taylor equation may also be appropriate when data on wind speed and humidity are difficult to obtain.
