Year: 2018
Type: article
Abstract: Based on 30 notebooks belonging to Soledad Díaz’s own personal archives, written from 1941 to 1946 in the normal school where she studied in Une, Cundinamarca (Colombia), this paper aims to answer the question of how to demonstrate writing practices at female rural normal schools. Two concepts will be used, one from literacy anthropology studies (literacy events) and another from reading sociology (reading scenarios). After an adaption of the concepts to writing practices, scenarios and writing events will reveal that these practices in rural women’s normal schools revolve around their professional training from a writing of care. Thus, the uses and function of writing are associated with the administration, order and direction, in this case, of their daily life as a head of the house, guide of the peasant and caretaker of the sick due to the orientation of educational policies towards the idea of the recognition of the population as functional individuals within a social nation.
