Abstract: To theEditor—We thank Olle et al for their correspondence [1] and for clarifying the distinction between the Food and Drug Administration’s intended use of the terms “fecal microbiota product” and “live biotherapeutic product.” The field of microbiome-based therapeutics is evolving rapidly, and clear terminology will ensure that clinicians can distinguish between different treatment modalities. We are optimistic that fecal microbiota products and live biotherapeutic products, like fecal microbiota transplants before them, will enable more effective treatment for Clostridioides difficile infection and other multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. We anticipate that all 3 therapies will continue to have value for patients with these infections—and for scientists seeking to understand their mechanisms.
