The Impact Of Vegetating Building Surfaces On Urban Microclimate

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Approximately half of the world's population lives in cities and this rate has been increasing from past to present. This increasing urban population has brought with it dense and irregular construction and has led to the disappearance of green areas, thus causing many problems such as urban heat island effect, air pollution, noise pollution. In this regard, many studies have been carried out to replace the increasing number of artificial surfaces. Planting on building surfaces allows plants to play a role as an architectural and constructive facade element in buildings and to be used as a sustainable material. Planting on building surfaces also stands out with the benefits it provides to the urban climate. Preventing the urban heat island effect, improving environmental and indoor air quality, saving energy, reducing noise pollution are just a few of these benefits. In this study, the definitions and scopes of planting on building surfaces as facade and roof gardens, their effects on urban climate and application examples are presented through literature studies. National and international 10 facade and roof garden applications are examined, tabulated and the results are evaluated.
