Growth mechanism of chromia scales on a model Ni-30Cr alloy at high temperatures
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Oxidation tests with markers and tracers were carried out to investigate the growth mechanism of chromia scales on a model Ni-30Cr alloy. The presence of grains oriented along the c axis of chromia indicate a dominant outward (cationic) growth at 800 and 900 °C. The cationic growth is also suggested by tracer experiments with 18O and the diffusion path is further identified as grain boundaries by tracer experiments with 54Cr. Combining with the previous studies, we propose that the scales grow via diffusion of chromium vacancies at 900 °C and oxygen vacancies at 500 °C.
