Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: This study delves into the pivotal role of safety culture in maritime operations and its implications for human resources (HR) practices. Through a systematic literature review and content analysis, the research aims to elucidate the current state of safety culture within the maritime industry, examine the HR strategies that support or hinder the development of a robust safety culture, and identify future directions for enhancing maritime safety. Drawing from a range of academic and industry-related databases, the study employs a rigorous methodological framework, encompassing specific criteria for the inclusion and exclusion of relevant literature, to synthesize findings from peer-reviewed articles and grey literature. Key findings reveal that a strong safety culture is intrinsically linked to effective HR practices, including strategic recruitment, continuous training, leadership development, and open communication. The future landscape of maritime safety presents both opportunities and challenges, notably the integration of digital technologies and the need for international collaboration on safety standards. Strategic recommendations emphasize the importance of leadership commitment, the integration of safety into HR practices, the judicious use of technology, and a continuous improvement ethos in safety practices. The study concludes that advancing safety culture in maritime operations requires a multifaceted approach, underpinned by robust HR strategies and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. It also identifies areas for further research, including the impact of technological advancements on safety culture, the role of cross-cultural competence, and the correlation between seafarer well-being and safety outcomes.
