Toxicological Analysis of Lead Poisoning Cases among Children in Northern Region of Saudi Arabia

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Lead poisoning has become a significant concern in Saudi children in the Northern region due to industrial, build-up, and farming influence. Lead is toxic and potentiated in children and affects their neurological as well as developmental systems in the body. The purpose of this research was to analyze the prevalence, sources and impacts of lead poisoning among children in the Northern region of Saudi Arabia. A descriptive research design was adopted, and secondary data on lead poisoning cases was collected using desktop research between September 2023 and February 2024. Using Microsoft Excel and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), descriptive statistics was applied to look for patterns, relationships with demographics, and health consequences. Initial comparisons indicate that children are especially at risk of lead exposure from industrial emissions, contaminated soil and lead-in toys, and higher blood lead levels (BLLs) in male children. Some health impacts are kidney problems, nerve problems, and mental impairments. These results formed the basis of the discussion as to when the public should develop awareness and when preventive measures should be put in place, plus the diagnostic and treatment facilities in rural areas. The findings concluded that lead poisoning is still dangerous to children and that preventive measures are necessary. Subsequent studies should be conducted to determine the deficits of developmental gains and possible benefits accruable from nutritional interventions on vulnerable children.
