Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: Introduction: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) remains a global health concern, with varying prevalence across regions.PUD is marked by ulcers in the stomach, pylorus, duodenum, or esophagus, leading to severe complications if left untreated, such as bleeding, perforation, and obstruction.Key contributors to PUD include Helicobacter pylori infection, prolonged NSAID use, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and stress.Other factors like diet, genetics, and socioeconomic status also influence PUD development. Materials and Methods:A pre-experimental, one-group pre-test post-test design was used, with a sample size of 40 nursing students.Data were collected before and after the implementation of the structured teaching program. Results: The study showed a significant improvement in students' knowledge following the structured teaching program. The obtained "t" value of 11.43 was higher than the table value (2.02) at a significance level of p<0.05, indicating the program's effectiveness.Comparison of pre-test and post-test scores demonstrated a marked increase in knowledge, with no significant association found between post-test knowledge and demographic variables. Conclusions:The structured teaching program was effective in enhancing nursing students' knowledge about the risk factors and prevention of peptic ulcers. The program significantly improved awareness, highlighting the importance of educational interventions in promoting understanding and prevention of PUD among healthcare students.
