Abstract: Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that underpin the economy have been acknowledged in East Kalimantan Province. However, the growth of many MSMEs is still considered suboptimal. This study delves into the influence of HR Competence, flexible strategies, and sustainable performance in East Kalimantan, particularly in the Penajam Pasir Utara (PPU) and Sangata Regency areas. Our observations of 70 MSME actors, analyzed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) Structural Equations, reveal that flexible strategies can drive sustainable performance. However, there's a need for improvement in human resource (HR) competencies to drive sustainable performance. The survey also found that flexible strategies could not mediate the relationship between HR competencies and sustainable performance. The contribution of this study is intended to develop current knowledge about sustainable performance in MSMEs in East Kalimantan, especially in the PPU and Sangata Regency areas. The potential impact of these findings on MSME development in the region is significant, making this study a crucial read for those interested in MSME growth.
