Analyzing Hydrodynamic Changes in Dubai Creek, UAE: A Pre- and Post-Extension Study

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This paper compares the effects of the Dubai Creek extension on its hydrodynamics and water flushing dynamics. Dubai Creek is a 24 km-long artificial seawater stream in Dubai, which underwent a 13 km extension connecting it to the Arabian Gulf. The rapid urbanization of Dubai and this extension significantly impacted the creek. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic and flushing models, developed using Delft3D Flexible Mesh, were used to assess water circulation and quality before and after the extension. The models were accurately calibrated and validated, with high correlation values and minimal RMSE and Bias. The flushing models demonstrated a significant improvement in water renewal, reducing pollutant residence times in the extended creek compared to the old one. This enhancement highlights the positive impact of the extension project on the aquatic ecosystem and overall water quality of the creek.
