Comprehensive analysis of tubular combustion chambers in Turbo-Ramjet engines for enhanced hypersonic propulsion

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Anticipating a doubling in global air travel demand by 2040, this study underscores the need for innovation in aviation propulsion systems. Traditional Turbo-jet engines face limitations beyond Mach 2 due to temperature constraints. The Turbo-Ramjet, an air-breathing engine, offers a solution by compressing air at higher Mach numbers and employing a compressor-turbine mechanism at lower speeds. This research delves into a comprehensive analysis of the tubular combustion chamber in Turbo-Ramjet engines, aiming to unravel its intricate dynamics, performance characteristics, and impact on engine efficiency. Turbo-Ramjet engines, known for their versatility in hypersonic flight applications, rely heavily on the performance of their combustion chambers for optimal operation. The study details the distribution of air mass flow among the combustor's zones, with cooling holes effectively meeting cooling requirements. The subsequent step involves calculating various combustor components using a mixed theoretical and empirical method, providing a foundation for future experimental testing. Kerosene, with the chemical formula C12H23, is chosen as the fuel. Utilizing the CATIA V5 modeling program, three-dimensional simulations are conducted in the ANSYS 2018 software. The analysis focuses on the impact of Swirl vanes, cooling holes, and their collaborative effects in the combustion chamber with the creation of three geometric models. The outcomes are visually presented, offering valuable insights into the design and optimization of tubular combustion chambers in Turbo-Ramjet engines. This research contributes significantly to the advancement of propulsion systems for hypersonic and space exploration applications, aligning with the evolving demands of the aviation industry.
