Realization of low-frequency omnidirectional curve beam resonator (OCBR): Analytical spectral formulation and experimental characterization

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The primary contribution of this study lies in the realization and characterization of the Omnidirectional Curved Beam Resonator (OCBR) and the development of a spectral element formulation for the curved beam resonator. This research investigates the dynamic behavior and effectiveness of a novel OCBR designed for embedding within hollow structural configurations for vibration control. The spectral element matrix of the curved beam elements is formulated, considering all six degrees of freedom using rigid body dynamics theories and incorporating mass inertia into the model. Analytical solutions for the Frequency Response Function (FRF), derived using the spectral matrix and fixed boundary conditions, closely matched experimental results, confirming the proposed model's accuracy. Experimental setups with different orientations validated the theoretical predictions, consistently observing resonant frequencies at 26 Hz, 32 Hz, 72 Hz, and 78 Hz, corresponding to the OCBR's axial, in-plane, and out-of-plane vibrations. Numerical modeling in COMSOL provided detailed insights into system behavior, with deflected shapes at resonant frequencies confirming analytically predicted resonances. The close agreement between analytical, numerical, and experimental results underscores the OCBR design's validity and practical applicability in various structural configurations. This study demonstrates that the OCBR is a promising solution for vibration control, particularly in achieving attenuation in the lower frequency band, advancing structural vibration control.
