Expression and distribution of MUC1 in the developing and adult kidney
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: MUC1 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the apical surface of polarized epithelial tissues and most carcinomas. MUC1 may play novel roles in the kidney including defense against infections. Here, we examine the expression of MUC1 in mouse and human kidneys. We show that the distal nephron and the urinary system are the predominant sites of expression of both message and protein, implicating segment-specific roles including distal nephron defense against ascending bacteria.
