A three-dimensional analytical model for performance evaluation of thermoelectric generators

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: A three-dimensional (3D) theoretical model for thermoelectric generators (TEGs) has been developed in this paper, resulting in analytical solutions for power output and energy conversion efficiency. The model comprehensively takes into account convective heat transfer between the thermoelectric legs and their ambient environment, along with 3D heat conduction within the ceramic substrates at both hot and cold ends. Numerical results highlight the prominent influence of convective heat loss from legs’ surfaces on efficiency, particularly in taller legs or with higher heat convection coefficients, while maintaining minimal impact on power output. Notably, neglecting 3D heat conduction in ceramic substrates significantly inflates the estimated performance of TEGs. Furthermore, the proposed 3D model can be streamlined into a one-dimensional (1D) form through the introduction of an impact factor to quantify convective heat loss from the legs, and an effective thermal conductance for the ceramic substrate. The proposed theoretical model serves as a valuable tool for simplifying the modeling process and optimizing the design of actual TEGs.
