Abstract: One hundred and fifty-four current and former female Dallas police officers provided advice to women who may wish to enter, or get promoted within, law enforcement. Advice fell into one of three categories across a spectrum of support: (1) strong discouragement; (2) encouragement, with a disclaimer; and (3) strong encouragement. Many participants highlighted gendered obstacles that female officers need to be prepared for. Several organizational changes must occur to ensure increased recruitment and retention of female officers. Examples of these changes might include the introduction of lactation rooms in police stations, daycare services and/or stipends to cover daycare costs, making promotional processes more transparent and standardized, and providing additional opportunities for training that could assist in promotional opportunities.
