Comparative Analysis of Gross Box Office Performance and Opening Week Box Office Performance : Evidence from Movies Released in the United States, 2019~2023
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the factors affecting the gross box office performance in the United States and the box office performance in the opening week for the top 100 highest-grossing films by year among films released from 2019 to 2023.The result shows that the production budget, the volume and valence of online reviews, the number of opening screens, and sequels are confirmed to significantly influence the gross box office performance in the United States. What is noticeable in the results is the lack of influence of expert reviews. Both the volume and valence of online reviews appear to be significant variables, while both factors of expert reviews are found to have no influence. The production budget, the volume of online reviews, the number of opening screens, and sequels are significant for the box office performance in the opening week. However, the valence of online reviews is found to be insignificant. This is due to the unique phenomenon that the influence of online reviews increases significantly after the first week of release.Recently, the percentage of box office performance in the opening week exceeds 30 percent of the gross box office performance in the United States. In this situation, this study, which analyzed both the gross box office performance and the box office performance of the opening week, is expected to provide various implications on the determinants of movie box office performance.
