Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the importance of Brazil-Africa relations within the broader framework of South Atlantic defense strategy. The primary objective is to assess how these relations contribute to Brazil's geopolitical positioning and defense capabilities in the South Atlantic. The analysis is structured around three intermediary objectives that guide the sections of the article: 1) exploring the historical foundations and evolution of diplomatic and military cooperation between Brazil and African nations; 2) evaluating the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea for maritime security and its role in Brazil’s defense strategy; and 3) identifying future opportunities for enhanced collaboration within multilateral organizations, particularly the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic (ZOPACAS), and how these may impact regional stability. As a conclusion, the article advocates for Brazil to take a proactive leadership role in the region, emphasizing the need for increased investment in defense and strategic partnerships to navigate future challenges effectively. A qualitative methodology is employed, with the article drawing on academic literature, policy documents, and books to provide a comprehensive review of Brazil-Africa relations. The findings underscore that deepening these relations is vital for ensuring maritime security, strengthening Brazil's influence, and fostering long-term stability in the South Atlantic region, which are essential components of its defense strategy.
