Unpacking Labour Force Participation in Madhya Pradesh: Trends, Disparities, and Determinants (1993–2012)
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines trends, disparities, and determinants of labour force participation (LFP) in Madhya Pradesh from 1993 to 2012, using data from the 50th, 55th, 61st, and 68th rounds of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).Employing a Logit model, the study investigates the influence of socio-demographic factors such as family size, education, age, marital status, caste, and gender on LFP, with a focus on rural-urban differences and gender disparities. The analysis reveals a declining overall LFP, driven by increased educational participation and limited employment opportunities, especially in rural areas.Women remain significantly underrepresented, with a growing proportion engaged in unpaid domestic duties. The findings highlight systemic barriers for marginalized groups, including SC/ST populations, and stark inequalities in employment types and access to quality jobs.Policy recommendations include expanding rural employment opportunities, enhancing skill development, addressing gender disparities, and improving access to education and formal employment. These measures aim to foster inclusive growth and equitable workforce participation in the state.
