Memory and the Public Use of History in Today’s Italy
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The article analyzes some aspects of current debates about Italians’ relationship with their national past. Risorgimento, fascism, anti-fascism, and colonialism continue to represent crucial nodes of discussion that go far beyond the scope of academic studies and debates. The author argues that public memory and the public uses of history concerning these themes represent a reliable seismograph mapping the evolution of contemporary Italy, and the gasps between its society and political class.
