Inequity in accessibility to urban parks in environmental gentrification areas based on Multi-G3SFCA: A case study of Wuhan’s main urban districts
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Environmental gentrification refers to the phenomenon in which improvements in environmental amenities, such as parks, green spaces and greenways, lead to an influx of high-income groups and displacement of original residents. This phenomenon results in rising housing prices, rents and living costs. Considering the main urban districts of Wuhan, this study conducted a bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis of urban parks and housing prices to identify typical environmental gentrification areas. The accessibility of urban parks in such areas was examined using an improved three-step floating catchment area (3SFCA) method. The inequity in accessibility was evaluated using the Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve and location quotient. RF-SHAP was employed to analyse the factors influencing the inequity in accessibility to urban parks across residential communities. This study drew the following conclusions: (1) environmental gentrification in Wuhan’s main urban districts primarily occurs in lakefront/riverfront areas, with the best accessibility but the worst equity around East Lake; (2) socioeconomic attributes, such as building ages(38%) and housing prices(15%), significantly influence the inequity in accessibility to urban parks; (3) physical spatial attributes, such as rail transit proximity(16%) and floor area ratio(6%), also play significant roles. This study filled a gap in existing research on the inequity in accessibility to urban parks in environmental gentrification areas and indicates that the development of urban parks around waterfront areas may further exacerbate this inequity. Promoting a fair approach to urban green public space development in the future is of great significance.
