Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: This paper offers an analysis of the field of teacher education in Chile through a scoping review of the academic literature available between 2006 and 2023. In contrast to a systematic review, the objective is to gain an overview of the existing literature on the topic, offering a comprehensive view of the knowledge within the field of those researching teachers in the Chilean school system. Two questions guide the purpose of the work: What are the main characteristics that make up the field of study of teachers in Chile between 2006 and 2023, and what are the main topics that make up this field? A total of 703 texts were identified, with an increase in annual production in the last five years. Most of the papers are produced in Spanish, published in Chilean and Latin American journals, and have women as first authors. The scoping review reveals the complexity and robustness of the field, highlighting five major central themes in which teacher subjectivity is deployed: identity, relationships, pedagogical-curricular work, labor regulations and social discourses. Nineteen sub-themes were identified, highlighting the importance of didactic knowledge, pedagogical-curricular issues, teacher identity, school system policies and the teacher-student relationship. The paper concludes by highlighting the evolution of the field of teacher studies in Chile, which has gone from having little literature in the 1970s to being a complex and interdisciplinary field today.
