Abstract: Expansion of the Spanish tourism industry since the 1950´s was based on a low-priced sun and beach model and replacement of traditional rail trips by a road and air transport model preferred by European tourists. In this article, we explore the diverging roles of rail and air transport as key elements of tourism logistics when demand began to expand, requiring a means of transport that guaranteed speed and economy. The Spanish tourism strategy during this period was accompanied by a technological revolution in air transport which authorities used to provide the infrastructure required, contributing to a resolution of the bottlenecks inherent in the traditional model and driving the tourism boom.
