Bioactive Potential of Stomopneustes Variolaris, A Tropical Sea Urchin – Antioxidant Activities
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the activities of Stomopneustes variolaris, a tropical sea urchin, using random selection and medical use.The organism contains biologically active compounds like PUFAs and β-carotene, which can prevent arrhythmia, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. It validated protein extracts and lipids from Stomopneustes variolaris parts for bioactive potentials, evaluating antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. The free radical scavenging (FRAP) activity of Stomopneustes variolaris gonads, shell, and spines using protein extracts at different concentrations. The results show that the DPPH radical scavenging activity of Stomopneustes variolaris gonads, shell, and spines is dependent on the concentration of protein extracts and FRAP activity increases with protein concentration, with the highest activity observed in the gonads protein extract. The FRAP activity is dependent on protein extract concentration, with a strong positive correlation observed for gonads, shell, and spine. It also verifies the reduction percentages of H2O2 scavenging activity with increasing protein concentration.
