Abstract: The aim of this study is to establish a critical comparison between the execution and conduction model of maritime search and rescue mission described by Brazilian legislation and the methodology employed in the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) of R-99 aircraft, during the Air France 447 accident, in order to identify common elements and differences in the concepts, approaches or requirements. The methodology used consisted of compiling data from various sources connected to the aim and then submit them to Thematic and Interpretive Analysis. The concepts and ideas related to the research were applied to the Concept Maps technique. The map generated was analysed and showed that only few concepts and aspects of SAR from R-99 are properly described in the Brazilian normative documents and some were mistakenly described. On the other hand, the academic community studies corroborate with the methodology used by the crew of the R-99 during the searches of Air France 447. Having this information, the competent authorities will have at its disposal the necessary subsidies to consider the need of a Search and Rescue manuals review to provide to the Mission’s Coordinators all necessary information for the correct use of SAR.
