Traditional Paddy Cultivation and Recent Agroforestry Plantations Differentially Impact Rock Outcrop Amphibians
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Rocky outcrops, such as lateritic plateaus in the Western Ghats, are home to many endemic and threatened species. These outcrops are labeled "wastelands" in government records and are undergoing rapid land-use change. We studied the impact of traditional paddy cultivation and orchards on frogs and their microhabitats. We found that converting plateaus to agriculture altered availability of important microhabitats for amphibians, such as rock pools.Different forms of agricultural practices can vary significantly in their impact on endemic species, underlining the importance of separately evaluating the effects of each practice, as impacts can vary at the level of individual species and the whole amphibian community.
