Plywood Proficiency: Navigating Quality Assurance in Manufacturing

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Proficiency testing (PT) is a critical tool for quality assurance in plywood manufacturing, ensuring that products meet the necessary quality benchmarks and are fit for purpose. This study investigates the effectiveness of PT in identifying quality issues, analyzes the root causes of these problems, and proposes solutions for enhancing product quality. The PT scheme design includes securing ply boards conforming to IS 303:1989, ensuring the homogeneity and stability of samples, and employing robust statistical analyses. The results from eight participating laboratories for the Modulus of Rupture (MoR) and Modulus of Elasticity (MoE) were statistically evaluated, revealing some concerns regarding the performance of the material. The study concludes that PT is an essential tool for maintaining high-quality standards in the plywood industry, providing insights into laboratory performance, and highlighting areas for improvement. Recommendations for process modifications and quality control measures were provided, emphasising the importance of material selection, adhesive application, pressing parameters, and layer alignment. This study also underscores the need for in-process inspections, random sampling, end-of-line testing, traceability, employee training, quality awareness campaigns, cross-functional collaboration, and supplier audits to maintain consistent product quality and reliability.
