A GAME changer in steroidal metabolite biosynthesis
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Continuous adaptation to changing environmental conditions is an evolutionary trait that many plant species have acquired to cope with biotic and abiotic stresses. Several plant families have adapted to synthesize a wide range of specialized metabolites, many of which serve protective functions. The significant biological activities of these specialized metabolites have been exploited by humans for pharmacological purposes. Notable examples include the monoterpenoid indole alkaloids vinblastine and vincristine from the Madagascar periwinkle (Apocynaceae) and the sesquiterpene lactone artemisinin from the annual wormwood (Asteraceae), which are used to treat cancers and malaria, respectively.
