Type: article
Abstract: Fe3+ is of paramount importance in many processes vital to human health and stimulates the study of innovative materials with strong sensing properties. To this aim, flexible luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant interest since they combine the advantages of ratiometric fluorescence with the ability to modify the structure to accommodate a large variety of guest atomic/molecule species. In this study, we have investigated the influence of different concentrations of Fe3+ ions on the MIL-53(Al) MOF by employing a comprehensive array of characterization techniques on the solid-state samples, aiming to relate the optical response with the structural modifications. Our results evidenced that Fe3+ addition induces a quenching of UV-blue photoluminescence bands, correlated with a reduction of lifetimes, and a decrease in all the Raman peaks. Powder X-ray diffraction spectra confirmed these findings, revealing modifications in peak positions and intensities with increasing Fe3+ concentrations, indicative of structural changes induced by Fe3+ ion incorporation. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated an improved thermal stability of Fe3+-exchanged MIL-53(Al) samples compared to the pristine MOF. These comprehensive characterizations shed light on the complex interplay between Fe3+ cation exchange and the photoluminescence and structural properties of solid-state MIL-53(Al) MOF, providing valuable insights for the rational design and engineering of MOF-based materials for various applications, including sensing, catalysis, and optoelectronics.
