The Effect of Cu Doping on Structural Distortions and Oxygen Vacancies in SrFeO3−δ

Type: article
Abstract: This study employs X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy to thoroughly investigate the impact of copper ion doping on the structural properties and oxygen vacancies of SrFeO3-δ perovskite oxides. XRD analysis confirms that all samples maintain a single-phase perovskite structure, and demonstrates that the lattice constants decrease and the unit cell volumes contract as the level of copper doping increases. Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals that with increased copper doping, the valence state of iron ions transitions from Fe3.5+ to Fe4+, and the Fe-O bond environment undergoes significant distortion, indicating an increase in local structural distortions. The increase in copper doping leads to a higher number of oxygen vacancies, due to the introduction of Cu2+ and Cu3+ which disrupts the charge balance and ion radius match, thereby exacerbating lattice distortions. Furthermore, iodometric titration results further confirm the trend of increasing oxygen vacancies with higher copper content. This provides crucial theoretical support for the further development of SrFeO3-δ based materials in energy conversion and storage applications.
